It's kind of ridiculous and it's full of cliches. But the last book was fun. I don't know why this book bothered me so much. Maybe it wasn't the moment for this kind of story. Or maybe this second part was worse. It's full of racism and misogyny. *The protagonist thinks that Koreans can be racist to white people (spoiler: no, people of color can't be racist to their oppressors)*They mention Donald Trump.<br><br>This series is just too much fun. I think the diary aspect, although somewhat original and gimmicky at the time, really makes it hard to comment on the plot of the book. A lot of the book is introspection, so thankfully Mias a really likeable character. The bonus for me here, and I think its why I rated it higher than it probably deserves, is Anne Hathaways mind-blowing performance of narrator. Both works show Nietsche lashing out at self-deception, astounded at how often morality is based on vengefulness and resentment. Now, in two paperback volumes, Bantam presents all fifty-six short stories and four novels featuring Conan Doyle’s classic hero - a truly complete collection of Sherlock Holmes’s adventures in crime!<br /><br />Volume I includes the early novel A Study in Scarlet, which introduced the eccentric genius of Sherlock Holmes to the world. This baffling murder mystery, with the cryptic word Rache written in blood, first brought Holmes together with Dr. John Watson. Next, The Sign of Four presents Holmes’s famous “seven percent solution” and the strange puzzle of Mary Morstan in the quintessential locked - room mystery. Also included are Holmes’s feats of extraordinary detection in such famous cases as the chilling “ The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” the baffling riddle of “The Musgrave Ritual,” and the ingeniously plotted “The Five Orange Pips,” tales that bring to life a Victorian England of horse-drawn cabs, fogs, and the famous lodgings at 221B Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes earned his undisputed reputation as the greatest fictional detective of all time.<br /><br />A study in scarlet --<br />The sign of four --<br />Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: A scandal in Bohemia; The red-headed league; A case of identity; The Boscombe Valley mystery; The five orange pips; The man with the twisted lip; The adventure of the blue carbuncle; The adventure of the speckled band; The adventure of the engineer's thumb; The adventure of the noble bachelor; The adventure of the beryl coronet; The adventure of the copper beeches; Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes: Silver blaze; The yellow face; The stock-broker's clerk; The "Gloria Scott"; The musgrave ritual; The Reigate puzzle; The crooked man; The resident patient; The greek interpreter; The naval treaty; The final problem; The return of Sherlock Holmes: The adventure of the empty house; The adventure of the Norwood builder; The adventure of the dancing men; The adventure of the solitary cyclist; The adventure of the priory school; The adventure of Black Peter; The adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton; The adventure of the six Napoleons; The adventure of the three students; The adventure of the golden pince-nez; The adventure of the missing three-quarter; The adventure of the abbey grange; The adventure of the second stain. <center><a href="javascript:download_now(0)" onclick="location.href='https://cpbldi.com/b2084f9'" rel="nofollow"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7bLk9rZ4iRaRdW3BnHeC2XTVaWkkur1x7qOFYFlPj_JIkYkpsjEF1YXtYCbpy3VlOmEAsWkr-9Kq7fjRnOQOD1QITM-5wrAu36lOCOIeB1UHEPAKycm4nCjYXCt80b-CHC9SToqyugJUC/s1600/dowbutton.png" /></a></center><br><h4>Present Based On Books Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories, Volume I (Sherlock Holmes #1-4, 6)</h4><table style="width: 100%px;"><tr><td>Title</td><td>:</td><td>Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories, Volume I (Sherlock Holmes #1-4, 6)</td></tr><tr><td>Author</td><td>:</td><td>Arthur Conan Doyle</td></tr><tr><td>Book Format</td><td>:</td><td>Mass Market Paperback</td></tr><tr><td>Book Edition</td><td>:</td><td>Special Edition</td></tr><tr><td>Pages</td><td>:</td><td>Pages: <span itemprop="numberOfPages">1059 pages</span></td></tr><tr><td>Published</td><td>:</td><td>August 26th 1986 by Bantam Classics (first published January 1st 1927)</td></tr><tr><td>Categories</td><td>:</td><td>Classics. Sixteen year old Teresita, illegitimate but beloved daughter of the wealthy and powerful rancher Don Tomas Urrea, wakes from the strangest dream - a dream that she has died. Only it was not a dream. This passionate and rebellious young woman has arisen from the dead with the power to heal - but it will take all her faith to endure the trials that await her and her family now that she has become the Saint of Cabora.<br /><br /><em>The Hummingbird's Daughter</em> is a vast, hugely satisfying novel of love and loss, joy and pain. Teresita, the Hummingbird's daughter, existed. She is an acknowledged saint. In this book you learn about her life in Mexico, until she was forced to leave at the age of 19. You learn about Mexico (food, lifestyle, religious beliefs and customs) and about the Mexican Civil War that took place in the last decade of the 1800s. You learn about her role in this war. Teresita was a distant cousin to the author. Although based on known fact, it is a novel.<br><br>I first became fascinated by the Mexican healer Teresita Urrea when I heard a UTEP professor give a brief profile of her life. She recommended this novel, written by a descendant, and it's one of the most beautiful, fascinating, compelling books I've ever read. The plot covers her early life up through her exile to the U.S. It's an epic--nearly 500 pages long and frankly, I'd have been happy if it had gone on several hundred more.<br><br>The Hummingbird's Daughter by Luis Urrea is the true story of a strong-willed, teenage Mexican girl in the 19th century. She was said to have miraculous healing powers, inspired the common people to value their native identity, and in the end helped bring about the Mexican Revolution. Can't get over it. I imagined it being told by a particularly gifted grandfather. Urrea is no grandfather yet, but his pure storytelling ability is second to none. He creates beautiful rhythms in simple language. The tales draw on pre-Christian Celtic mythology, international folktale motifs and early medieval historical traditions. While some details may hark back to older Iron Age traditions, each of the tales is the product of a developed medieval Welsh narrative tradition, both oral and written. Lady Charlotte Guest in the mid 19th century was the first to publish English translations of the collection, popularising the name "Mabinogion". The stories appear in either or both of two medieval Welsh manuscripts, the White Book of Rhydderch or Llyfr Gwyn Rhydderch, written c1350, and the Red Book of Hergest or Llyfr Coch Hergest, written c1382–1410, tho texts or fragments of some of the tales have been preserved in earlier 13th century and later mss. Scholars agree that the tales are older than the existing mss, but disagree over just how much older. The different texts originated at different times. Debate has focused on the dating of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi. Sir Ifor Williams offered a date prior to 1100, based on linguistic and historical arguments, while later Saunders Lewis set forth a number of arguments for a date between 1170 and 1190; Th Charles-Edwards, in a paper published in 1970, discussed both viewpoints, and while critical of the arguments of both scholars, noted that the language of the stories fits the 11th century. More recently, Patrick Sims-Williams argued for a plausible range of about 1060 to 1200, the current scholarly consensus.<br><br><h5>Rating Appertaining To Books The Mabinogion </h5>Ratings: 3.95 From 6195 Users | 354 Reviews<br><br><h6>Crit Appertaining To Books The Mabinogion </h6>I like mythological and I like medieval but this book is much more than that. Here they play at being soldiers in what seems to be complete isolation. That is, until the Germans begin revealing their whereabouts and leaving signs of their presence: a scarecrow, equipment the squad had dropped on a retreat from a reconnaissance mission and, strangest of all, a small fir tree hung with fruit, candles, and cardboard stars. Suddenly, Knott and the others must unravel these mysteries, learning as they do about themselves, about one another, and about the "enemy," until <em>A Midnight Clear</em> reaches its unexpected climax, one of the most shattering in the literature of war.<br><br><h5>Rating Appertaining To Books A Midnight Clear </h5>Ratings: 4.18 From 1456 Users | 72 Reviews<br><br><h6>Write Up Appertaining To Books A Midnight Clear </h6>This book is so wonderfully written, and so heartbreaking. Stefan Zweig's Marie Antoinette: The Portrait of an Average Woman is a dramatic account of the guillotine's most famous victim, from the time when as a fourteen-year-old she took Versailles by storm, to her frustrations with her aloof husband, her passionate love affair with the Swedish Count von Fersen, and ultimately to the chaos of the French Revolution and the savagery of the Terror. An impassioned narrative, Zweig's biography focuses on the human emotions of the participants and victims of the French Revolution, making it both an engrossingly compelling read and a sweeping and informative history. Marie-Antoinette proved childish and arrogant for much of her life, until it was too late to save herself. Her final days hardened her to the point of becoming a true queen, but it was too little, too late. Also, the inability of Louis XVI to take a single decision seems responsible for many of its failures. Not perfect, but brilliant. The Dark Forest idea is an interesting answer to Fermi's paradox. Of course it depends heavily on the initial assumptions: that matter in the universe is finite and that life increases exponentially. The analogy of the bacteria in the sea provide an interesting counterargument here. A straight exponential increase fills the oceans with bacteria quite rapidly. But of course, that's not what really happens. Really original ideas in any case. Strange to me,<br><br>About 80% through this book (after the Battle of Darkness), I needed a nap desperately. Charlie Citrine, an intellectual, middle-aged author of award-winning biographies and plays, contemplates two significant figures and philosophies in his life: Von Humboldt Fleisher, a dead poet who had been his mentor, and Rinaldo Cantabile, a very-much-alive minor mafioso who has been the bane of Humboldt's existence. Humboldt had taught Charlie that art is powerful and that one should be true to one's own creative spirit. Rinaldo, Charlie's self-appointed financial adviser, has always urged Charlie to use his art to turn a profit. At the novel's end, Charlie has managed to set his own course.<br><br><h5>Rating Containing Books Humboldt's Gift </h5>Ratings: 3.86 From 8059 Users | 541 Reviews<br><br><h6>Column Containing Books Humboldt's Gift </h6>"Wrestling match between Vita Contemplativa and Vita Activa" Lets be honest! Humboldts Gift is exhausting. It is a masterpiece, a brilliant study of a man fighting the world and his inner demons by withdrawing from active participation, but it leaves the reader frequently frustrated with the narrator, Charles Citrine, and his non-response to the problems he causes by contemplating life rather than living it actively. Florence is a talented musician who dreams of a career on the concert stage and of the perfect life she will create with Edward, an earnest young history student at University College of London, who unexpectedly wooed and won her heart. Newly married that morning, both virgins, Edward and Florence arrive at a hotel on the Dorset coast. At dinner in their rooms they struggle to suppress their worries about the wedding night to come. Edward, eager for rapture, frets over Florence’s response to his advances and nurses a private fear of failure, while Florence’s anxieties run deeper: she is overcome by sheer disgust at the idea of physical contact, but dreads disappointing her husband when they finally lie down together in the honeymoon suite. <br /><br />Ian McEwan has caught with understanding and compassion the innocence of Edward and Florence at a time when marriage was presumed to be the outward sign of maturity and independence. <em>On Chesil Beach</em> is another masterwork from McEwan—a story of lives transformed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken.<br><br><h5>Rating Out Of Books On Chesil Beach </h5>Ratings: 3.58 From 69031 Users | 6824 Reviews<br><br><h6>Comment On Out Of Books On Chesil Beach </h6><br><br>"...being in love was not a steady state, but a matter of fresh surges or waves, and he was experiencing one now."-- Ian McEwan, On Chesil Beach Almost no one can write about sex well in my opinion. There, she takes up with Innes Kent, a magazine editor who wears duck-egg blue ties and introduces her to the thrilling, underground world of bohemian, post-war Soho. She learns to be a reporter, to know art and artists, to embrace her life fully and with a deep love at the center of it. She creates many lives--all of them unconventional. And when she finds herself pregnant, she doesn't hesitate to have the baby on her own. <br /><br />Later, in present-day London, a young painter named Elina dizzily navigates the first weeks of motherhood. She doesn't recognize herself: she finds herself walking outside with no shoes; she goes to the restaurant for lunch at nine in the morning; she can't recall the small matter of giving birth. But for her boyfriend, Ted, fatherhood is calling up lost memories, with images he cannot place. <br /><br />As Ted's memories become more disconcerting and more frequent, it seems that something might connect these two stories-- these two women-- something that becomes all the more heartbreaking and beautiful as they all hurtle toward its revelation. <br /><br />Here Maggie O'Farrell brings us a spellbinding novel of two women connected across fifty years by art, love, betrayals, secrets, and motherhood. Like her acclaimed The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, it is a "breathtaking, heart-breaking creation." (The Washington Post Book World) and it is a gorgeous inquiry into the ways we make and unmake our lives, who we know ourselves to be, and how even our most accidental legacies connect us.<br><br><h5>Rating Appertaining To Books The Hand That First Held Mine </h5>Ratings: 3.91 From 13647 Users | 1468 Reviews<br><br><h6>Criticize Appertaining To Books The Hand That First Held Mine </h6>The book follows two stories. Totally a 5 star read.1. Hilarious 2. Colorful3. Uses fluffers as a cuss word4. Is about fairyland5. There's killing! A whole lot of killing. And blood!!! Lots of blood 😈My 5 reasons for the 5 star rating. Back to the review.Once upon a time, Gertrude our little main character used to be a sweet and innocent child until one day she fell into Fairyland. The only way back home was to go on a quest. Gertrude had to adventure the fluff out of Fairyland and find<br><br>"KITTY-BALLS-TASTIC!"The most fun, creative, hallucinogenically-colored comic I've read all year. While this isn't the "deepest" plot, it's actually more than I expected, and it works perfectly for the fairytale genre it's beating the living shit out of. This is Ren and Stimpy meets Disney, and it's obvious Skottie Young is sick to death of all the cutesy dancing and singing. What this breaks down to is a quest fantasy. Gert is looking for THE KEY, literally, to her escape. And she's not<br><br><br><center><a href="javascript:download_now(0)" onclick="location.href='https://cpbldi.com/b2084f9'" rel="nofollow"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7bLk9rZ4iRaRdW3BnHeC2XTVaWkkur1x7qOFYFlPj_JIkYkpsjEF1YXtYCbpy3VlOmEAsWkr-9Kq7fjRnOQOD1QITM-5wrAu36lOCOIeB1UHEPAKycm4nCjYXCt80b-CHC9SToqyugJUC/s1600/dowbutton.png" /></a></center><br>3.5ish stars. I'm a long time fan of Skottie Young. He pencilled one of my favorite (short) runs of Chris Yost and Craig Kyle's New X-Men series, and it was such a refreshing change to see his interpretation of superhero teenagers actually looking like teenagers (superpowers aside, of course) and not all like 'roided out Mr. Olympias. As such, I've been eagerly awaiting my chance to pick up this title of which Skottie Young is both the artist and writer! And the art is absolutely perfect. His<br><br>5 stars simply aren't enough. It's just like Alice in wonderland. If Alice went homicidal and started murdering the fluff out of everything in wonderland. It has ton of pretty dark humor and I laughed and giggled almost on every page.Illustrations are beautiful with lot of very colorful violence. Here is pic that illustrates it well: Language is also colorful. There is no cursing in Fairyland which doesn't stop Gertrude from tying so we often hear things like "Go fluff yourself or muffing fluffer".<br><br>So, this is the story of a little girl that gets sucked into a magical fairyland, and 30 years later is still stuck there...as a little girl. The concept is cute and the art is cute.<--gory but cute! However, after a while, I was sort of bored with not only Gertrude's attitude but with the overuse of words like fluffer & mother duckling to take the place of curse words.Skottie Young is an awesome artist, but I'm just not always a big fan of the way he writes. The plot in this one was sort<br><br>This was exactly what I was hoping it would be. Quirky, violent, chaotic, and entertaining. I love the concept and the contrast of the happy, vibrant fairyland to how psychotic and murderous Gertrude is. So many things are foreshadowed and I think the 2 main reasons I had for a lower rating were that 1 Barrons and Mac didn't seem to have as much time together and I got a little focused on that since I really wanted more for their relationship and I needed to know who/what Barrons was and got no real answers this book. The second reason was probably that cliffy of an ending sometimes it is really hard to read about (view spoiler)<br><br>Plot: 5 starsCharacters: 5 starsWriting: 5 starsSexiness: 5 starsEnding: 5 starsOverall: 5 starsBy the way, did anyone else kind of wet themselves laughing at the Mac Halo incident?
