Relation Toward Books Be Still and Listen: Experience the Presence of God in Your Life
The various crises we experience in society and culture today, at their root, reveal a spiritual problem: a profound lack of meaning. The mystical truths revealed in scripture can surely help.Part One, “Entering the Desert,” introduces the reader to principles of awareness, deep listening, and contemplation as essential for “hearing” what Scripture has to say. Part Two details the importance of mystery and struggle in the process of healing from any past or present wounds. And Part Three explores the “undivided heart” that is possible when we come to know God in silence and stillness.
With Be Still it is possible to explore the contemplative dimensions of the Bible, either on your own or in a group setting, as you perhaps never have before.

I really enjoyed Be Still and Listen! I recently finished reading it a second time. Amos Smith has such a nice way of weaving personal stories and reflections with Bible quotes and notes and teachings from other mystics, Saints, and authors. I have been practicing centering prayer for at least a year although not as intensely as most guidelines recommend and this book has enhanced my practice. The chapter lengths were perfect. I could read a chapter in one sitting, then read the questions andI was asked to write a review for Amos Smiths new book, Be Still and Listen. As Ive been very busy lately I thought Id just scan the book, write a few nice innocuous words and move on to my next project. I just couldnt do it.This is not spiritual fast food. Be Still and Listen isnt a book you can just peruse, it should be savored to gain the full effect. While there are many wonderful books that invite the reader to contemplate and reflect on their lives, the genius of Smiths work is the
At its simplest, Be Still And Listen is a book about contemplative prayer, or more specifically, centering prayer. This book is more than that though. Author Amos Smith gives the reader a crash course in Christian Mysticism and Contemplative Christianity. Be Still And Listen is written like a devotional. It contains ten chapters that are divided into short daily readings. Each chapter can easily be read in a week. There are a couple of things that I disagree with in the book, especially some of

The act of just stopping and listening is beyond most people. Amos Smith does a great job of reminding us to do just that. Smith outlines a lot of the Christian faith from a perspective that needs to be shared. As a non-Christian myself, I found this book extremely helpful in enlightening me on the values and core meaning behind a lot of what I thought was very different (given to me by what Id call Casual Christians).Smith also tends to focus a lot on the spirituality and the peace of solitude
An excellent, informative guide to the theory & practise Of Centering Prayer. I have found it easy to engage in his writing style & although I started reading it awhile back, I have returned to reading it with renewed gusto.I recommend it to anyone who wishes to begin A Centering Prayer practice.
A beautifully written book on prayer and intimacy with God. It reads like a devotional but very practical yet deep. The contemplative life is the seed that sprouts our joy and abiding in Christ. If you are ready to take your prayer life further, this is a good one to help you get there.
I love the depth of experience the author shares and the references noted. The most comprehensive work on centering prayer and mysticism Ive read. Written from a non-denominational perspective!
