A meaningful play based on the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, in which a Tennessee teacher was tried for teaching evolution. The accused was a slight, frightened man who'd deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus, the chief gladiators being the two great legal giants of the century. Locked in mortal combat, they bellowed & roared imprecations & abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely restraining themselves. America's freedom was at stake.

Personal Response: I thinkInherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee is a great book for English class. I believe this because it is a very powerful drama written after a true event. It gives readers their own perspective and opinion on things that happen in the book. The book displays a lot of symbolism and themes throughout the story. I reread the script after seeing the play. I better appreciated that the characters are fully developed, not cardboard cutouts. (It is worth noting that this play is not about science vs. all religion, but a religious subsect that takes the Bible as literal, or completely inerrant.) Even though it was written quite a few years ago, I still thought there were many great lessons that still apply today. I really liked the way the authors wrote this play. Personal Response:I thought Inherit The Wind wasnt the greatest drama that I have ever read but still was decent. The plot bounced around a lot, such as in scene three the plot jumped from Cates being arraigned in scene two to the Prosecution calling its last witness.
