This book is so much more than just a tale about a teenage boy trying to come to grips with his sexuality--to believe or conclude as much is a total disservice to both the characters and the reader. If you enjoy a fast paced plot and pages of dialogue--this book isn't for you. But if you enjoy getting to know a character--so intimately that when the book is over, you wonder when you'll see him again, then welcome to Visible, the large looming house on the hill. Phil is a seventeen year old boy,You know what? I didn't love it. I didn't even like it. I hated the constant flashbacks, I hated waiting in fear for what was going to happen in the REAL story, and then having the whole premise of "before the flashback" completely forgotten. But at the same time, this book HAS to be read. There is something so ... true. So undervalued and true about this book. This is real. This is life. The author just reflects a life in progress in a way that completely and perfectly details everyone else's

I've rather enjoyed this book, aside from some minor issues. The development of the plot is a bit uneven, slow paced in the first half and too eventful near the end. I liked this book even more than the first time I read it about 2 years ago!In the beginning, it seemed a bit boring and cheesy because of the protagonist's passivity and the many metaphors, but it gets better, especially in the end. I feel bad saying this but the main problem with this book is that it was too long. Steinhöfel gives an interesting story built around the intermingling of the present with and ever-present past. Unfortunately, the longer the novel drags on the more exhausted the reader becomes. I flew past the first 200 pages but then had to crawl to the finish.
