One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now and out of all sound except the distant speaking of the voices I sometimes hear a moment before sleep, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six. All the Christmases roll down toward the two-tongued sea, like a cold and headlong moon bundling down the sky that was our street; and they stop atThe author is looking back at celebrating Christmas when he was a child. It is a romanticized and amusing look at a happy time when he enjoyed walking around the village with his friends, caroling, and playing in the snow. A kitchen fire at the neighbor's home provided excitement for the boys. A feast with the family was important, after which the Uncles smoked their new cigars and the Aunts had a nip of port. Times were simpler when a Christmas present was a scarf or a new pair of boots. Fiddle

What a magician with words, I wished I was beter in English to truely enjoy this poetic story to the max. I also loved how it was this simple story was made into something really big. This book is in the 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up challenge I am doing.
A simple story of a young boy's youth. Nostalgic, humorous and a delight! Many thanks to my Goodread friend Manny for letting me know that I could listen to the story on YouTube, read by none other than Dylan Thomas himself!
Dylan Thomas is a Welsh poet known for his poem, "Do not go gently into that good night." I am thrilled to learn he has written a prose poem about Christmas. This tiny book described his experience of Christmas "years and years ago, when (he) was a boy" in Wales. It contained some truly lush and beautiful lines about snow and captured the nostalgia associated with Christmas at a time when life was relatively simpler. If you love poetry, you will most certainly find this an enchanting treat.
