I first read this book on the car trip to my Freshman year at college. I had the book because I forgot to mail in the refusal card to Science Fiction Book Club. A more fortuitous mistake by far. This book was my introduction to Harlan Ellison. I have since read over thirty different books and anthologies containing his work. I would recommend this book even if the only worthwhile story was "A Boy And His Dog", but luckily every single story is a treat to read. Harlan Ellison is in my top ten for

This collection is extremely good, Ellison is an epic writer, no doubt. True Science Fiction creative imagination and presentation. Unexpected, thought-provoking stories. Highly recommended. The titular story is one of the best I've read in years; on its own, deserves five stars and fervent worshippers. The second in the collection, "Along The Scenic Route", was good enough to hook me up, reminding me of a good old-fashioned Japanese manga episode. The rest I didn't like much.
