A most staggering depiction of World War I centering on two Canadian Indians who were utilized most effectively as snipers. The story moves back and forth between battles and the men's early life in the Canadian wilderness. A raw and brutal telling which is at once beautiful and memorable.

This book was quite a heavy read, but a worthwhile read as well as a beautifully written and deeply feeling read. I felt I was with the main character, native Canadian, Xavier and his Auntie as they traveled the river on their way home as he is near death following his time serving in WWI. The war scenes were memories as he tried to deal with what he had experienced on the front lines of the war and we begin to understand what had happened to him.
