A National Book Award Longlist Selection

When your cousin goes missing under suspicious circumstances, who do you call? There’s only one man for the job: a half-crazed, half-feral, one-eyed ex-governor named Skink. Skink joins 14-year-old Richard on a breakneck chase across Florida, undaunted by lightning storms, poisonous snakes, flying bullets, and giant gators. There are a million places cousin Malley could be, a million unpleasant fates that might have befallen her, but one thing is certain: in the Florida swamp, justice is best served wild.

Skink no surrender is about a 14 year old named Richard. He is best friends with his cousin, Malley, who is talking to an anonymous, suspicious man online. Richard loves the beach, especially turtles. Every weekend he would try to go to the beach with Malley to look at the turtle nests. Malley did answer her phone so Richard went without her. While looking at a turtle nest he noticed a straw sticking out of it. He pulled out the straw to see what would happen and out comes a man in a plastic

After 4 previous books for younger readers, author Hiaasen lists this as his first book for teens. I enjoyed the book, but I haven't been a teen for a half century. At any rate, with topics including cyber stalking, kidnapping, auto theft and attempted murder, I wouldn't aim this book at the lower range of teen-age readers. I enjoyed encountering Skink again (last seen, I believe, in Sick Puppy (1999)), the one-eyed, ex-governor, eco-warrior, who has appeared in at least four previous novels.

I freakin' love Carl Hiaasen. And probably my favorite of his characters EVER is Skink, the former Florida governor who went crazy, took off his clothes, and walked into the swamp one day. Skink is perfect for a YA or MG book, and at last he's in one! (In fact, he's going to be in a bunch, this is the start of a new series. Yay!)Young Richard is worried about his cousin. She told her parents that she was heading off to early orientation for the new boarding school she'll be attending, but

Love anytime we can get some Skink!!!! This was a very charming quick read, as Skink starts imparting his wisdom to a few teen millennials as he performs a rescue in the process. But for God's sake don't litter and remember fresh road-kill is still edible!! :-)

This is the second time I have read this book and I am as happy with it as I was the first time.If you have read any of the author's adult books, please don't worry that this is going to be inappropriate for young adults or teens. It is slapstick, endearing, a bit on the violent side and deals with situations that children must think about every day. Stalkers, running away from home etc.It ends on an HEA and it was a thrill to see Skink in one of these young adult novels.

The first 50 pages of this book are not intriguing but once you are farther in it gets better. Most of Hiassans books are aimed at a younger audience and this one was said to be for teens. The story line and events are at a higher level but the diction is mostly the same. I would revoked this book to people older than 10 or 12 but don't read it before bead because some parts are pretty sketchy!
